Favorite Natural Baby Powder Recipe

I made a few different batches of baby powder when my first grandchild arrived in 2000.  Since then I have tweaked the recipe and will share with you my favorite natural baby powder recipe.

First – What is in Baby Powder – it is a powder that is used to prevent and or treat diaper rash on baby bottoms.

For many years baby powder was made from talc which is a substance that is known to contain asbestos.  We all know that asbestos has been linked to cancer.  So we certainly don’t want to use Talc on our babies.

Johnson and Johnson Baby Powder was first introduced in 1893 and has since been one of the most used powders.

According to Wikipedia in 2016 more than 100 women in the US sued Johnson and Johnson for ignoring the possibility of cancer risks that were associated with its baby powder, then in May of 2020, they announced that they would no longer be using Talc in their baby powder.

Also in 2020 Johnson and Johnson announced they would stop all talc sales worldwide by 2023 while at the same time maintaining that its talc-based baby powder is safe to use and does not contain asbestos.

Ingredients that are better for Baby Powder

Other safer powders can be used to make your baby powder, some of the ingredients found in natural baby powder can be:

Here are some great natural baby powders

Burts Bees is a Natural Baby Powder that is recommended by Pediatricians.

The ingredients found in this Natural Powder are: zea mays (corn) starch, sodium bicarbonate, montmorillonite, bentonite, Commiphora myrrha leaf cell extract, Ulmus fulva bark powder, rosa centifolia flower extract, parfum (fragrance), limonene

A key ingredient in Burt’s Bees Dusting Powder is Cornstarch also known as Zea Mays – it comes from the corn plant and is extremely versatile.  It acts as a natural moisture absorber and bulking agent.

Baby Powder Recipe

This recipe will make 7 cups of Baby Powder

What you will need to make this recipe:

You will need an 8 or larger cup mixing bowl or measuring cup – I use a 10-cup plastic one.  A wooden spoon or similar spoon to mix up the powder and a few shaker bottles.

This Baby Powder Recipe is simple to make.

  • Put 5 cups of Arrowroot Powder in the mixing bowl slowly add the Zinc Oxide, White Clay, and mix well.
  • Once that is mixed up well add the Aloe Vera Extract and continue to mix until it is blended well.
  • Put into a container to use for baby or put into shaker bottles.
  • I used to sell a lot of this baby powder at Farmer’s Markets and Craft fairs.  I always had extra after making it for the grandchildren so would package up the extra powder into nice aluminum white shaker bottles and put a cute label on them.

This recipe makes 7 cups of baby powder which will last a long time.  If you don’t want that much just simply cut the recipe in half or quarter for the required amount.

I’m sure your baby or baby grandchild will be happy with this homemade product.

If you are looking for natural baby powder and don’t want to make it yourself here are some more suggestions for Natural BABY Powder.

  • Dusting legs with powder before having them waxed will help protect them against the burn that can come after waxing

  • Add some tea tree and put in your running shoes or those hockey skates to keep them dry and odor-free

A Great Place to Buy Soap-Making Supplies

Buying Soap supplies online

All the changes going on in the world over the last few years have got me looking elsewhere for my soap-making supplies.

Some suppliers are being stretched with containers being stuck on ships or just not getting here and of course the lack of supplies to begin with.

Recently I have started doing some shopping on Amazon.  More and more soap supplies that can be bought through their site and the prices are not that bad at all!  Shop around though, but with Amazon Prime and free shipping in some cases the price is right.

Just starting out with soap making or are just wanting to make some soap for gifts, Amazon really has some fairly good prices on supplies.

Doing some of the research I have found some reasonably priced soap supplies.

The top 5 soap-making oils to be exact!

Soap Kills Viruses

Soap kills viruses – yup that’s right!

Plain old ordinary soap kills viruses and actually works better than disinfectants because ordinary soap destroys the viruses’ structure.

Soap is the best thing to use in the fight against viruses but when it is not available use alcohol wipes.

The reason soap is better is that it dissolves the fat membrane and the virus just simply falls apart and becomes inactive. That is simply put because I’m not a scientist and don’t want to bore you with science and chemistry. If you want to know more about that you can follow this link Deadly Viruses are no match for soap Continue reading

Water and soap making

How much water is in the soap recipe?

You have your oils all picked out and are creating your first recipe!

Now you are wondering about the water/lye mix.  How do I find out how much water to add the lye to?  Does it have to be exact?

The addition of water is a little different from that of the oils and sodium hydroxide.  The oil and lye measurements need to be pretty exact, but with the water, you have room to play.

When creating your own soap recipes just make sure you use a calculator to determine the amount of lye that needs to be added to the water.  This calculator will also give you a range for the amount of water to use.  The amount of lye needs to be exact and the lye will be a weighed measurement where the water will be volume.

Bath Bomb Recipe

Bath Bomb Recipe

This year I made some bath bombs for Christmas Gifts, but not just any….these have oils that produce a moisturizing bath.  You will love this easy bath bomb recipe!

Bath Bombs

These lovely little moisturizing bath additives will not fizz up and quickly disappear, these bath bombs will help to moisturize that dry itchy winter skin as they gently fizz while taking a bath.

In this recipe, cocoa butter or hemp butter is added for wonderful moisturizing properties and as you drop them in your tub, they will gently and slowly fizz while moisturizing your skin as you relax in the bath.

Cocoa Butter is high in fatty acids and is known to help hydrate and nourish the skin while improving elasticity at the same time.  Cocoa butter will help to form a protective barrier helping to hold the moisture into the skin.

These have always been a favorite, I began making these every Christmas for my friends and family.  I still do this, but also sell them at Christmas Craft fairs and other events attended throughout the year.

The best name for these is bath kisses……this is because the cocoa butter kisses your skin with moisture leaving it feeling soft and smooth.

This recipe can be doubled or tripled for whatever quantity is required,  you can add color or scents to customize the kisses however you like.

When adding scents I always use essential oils, it doesn’t take too much to add a wonderful smell to these bath goodies – add a little, to begin with, and adjust to how strongly you prefer to scent them.

When adding color be sure to use Skin safe bath colors and important colors that will not stain your tub.  Below you will find a link to some safe colors for both.

When this recipe is made with organic cocoa butter it has the wonderful smell of cocoa and can be left unscented.

For this recipe you will require the following equipment:

  • glass measuring cup (4 cups)
  • kitchen scale to measure the weights
  • double boiler or a pot with a wire rack
  • bath bomb molds or molds of your choice to pour into

Metal Bath Bomb Mold 7 Sets(6 Hemispheres, 2 Starfish, 2 Heart, 2 Shell, 2 Scallop), HBlife DIY Bath Bomb Kits with 100 pcs Shrink Wrap Bags 6 x 6 Inch, BONUS Mini Sealer for Bath Bomb Making, Handmade Soaps, and Crafts

Bath Bomb Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz of Cocoa Butter or Hemp Butter – Hemp Butter Recipe
  • 1/4 – 1/2 tsp of fragrance or essential oil (optional)
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/8 cup of cornstarch

Directions:

  • Melt the cocoa butter
  • If adding scent do that when cocoa butter is melted
  • If using liquid color do that also when cocoa butter is melted
  • While Cocoa butter is melting mix the dry ingredients
  • Remove from heat
  • Pour into Baking Soda, Corn Starch, and Citric Acid mixture ( if using dry color – I add it to this mixture and blend)
  • Blend this mixture real well – it should be a little soupy but not too runny
  • Using a teaspoon be careful and pour into bath bomb molds, chocolate mold, or the mold of your choice.
  • Let these stand at room temperature to cool a bit
  • then place them into the freezer for 15 – 30 minutes to set up.
  • Pop out and place on wax paper until thawed.
  • Then put them into bags and tag them with a list of ingredients.

Bath Bomb Molds

This is the mold that I used for the pot leaf bath kisses you see in the picture above.

These are made with Hemp Oil

They turned out well, I put 5 of these into small organza bags and sold them at the Christmas Craft Fairs.

They sold well as stocking stuffers.

Here is the link to the molds I purchased

Marijuana Cannabis Weed Hemp Leaf Silicone Molds for Pot Candy Mold Chocolate Gummy Gummies, 2 Pack

and these lovely 3×4 organza bags worked perfectly with the Pot Leaf bath kisses.

The white was great at not hiding but showing off the color of these bath kisses nicely.  I think any other color would have taken away from them.

You can purchase them on Amazon by clicking on this link

100Pcs Organza Bags 3×4 inches Sheer Organza Bags Jewelry Drawstring Mesh Pouches Wedding Party Christmas Favor Gift Candy Bags, White

Great Mold for Bath Bombs

Here is another mold that is great for this bath recipe – any candy mold will work.

I find with this recipe these are better than the big round bath bomb molds.  The big round molds are best for bath bombs, for the kisses they are almost too big.

When using the smaller molds you can add two or three, depending on how much moisture you want in the bath.  With the large round molds I have found that in my smaller tub, they are too much so I cut them in half.

When I had my large soaker tub they were perfect, but not everyone has a large soaker tub so I stay away from making those larger round ones now.

2 Packs 12 Cavity Silicone Flower Soap Mold Cake Bread Mold Chocolate Jelly Candy Baking Mould Muffin Pan

Skin Safe Bath Bomb Colors

Here are some skin-safe colors to add to your bath bomb recipe.  These are liquids that can be added to the melted oils.

Experiment, maybe you want a marbled look, then add as you are mixing the oils with the dry ingredient.

Coloring these can be fun.  Once you get the hang of making the Bath Kisses – play around with the colors.

12 Color Bath Bomb Soap Dye – Skin Safe Bath Bomb Colorant

Tips when making your Bath Bombs

When making these I find making them in small batches works well.  I like to do these smaller batches scenting and coloring each one differently.

I use a 2 or 4-cup glass measuring cup and place that in a pot of boiling water (with a metal rack on the bottom of the pot)

The scent is added to the cocoa butter as it is melting

The dry ingredients are measured out and put in a glass bowl – I pour the cocoa butter into the dry ingredients when melted and add color then.

This mixture should be blended well and once it’s blended it will look a little on the soupy side.  I sometimes find I have to add a few more drops of cocoa butter or maybe a little more baking soda to get the right consistency. Every batch can be a little different.
