Coconut Soap

Posted on 01-1701-17 by Tes

This coconut soap recipe was maybe not the best seller in the store, although blends that had a coconut scent were better sellers. Also, the toasted coconut scent sold better than the non-toasted scent. My best seller with a coconut scent in it was Life’s a Beach!

Coconut-scented soap bar, with its natural color.

Coconut soap recipe:

  • Basic #2 recipe:
    51.2 oz Olive/Canola blended oils
    6.2 oz coconut oil
    6.2 oz Palm oil
    23.4 oz water
    8.6 oz lye crystals
    for this scented bar, add:
1 T toasted coconut fragrance oil
    2.5 T coconut FO
  • colorant: none

One nice thing about this bar is not needing to color it. Its natural color will be really close to the color of coconut.   As wonderful as coconut oil is, it can be drying in high amounts, say over 25% of your oils. You can test this theory yourself by smearing coconut oil on your face. First, it feels wonderful, but the next day you will notice that your skin does seem a little drier. People that use way more coconut oil in soap, will also be superfatting it to reduce the drying effect.

The soap below has added the visual appeal of sprinkling coconut on the top of the bars. Sprinkle while your soap is still warm so it sticks better.

The following image shows a beautiful soap, with an awesome label, and it states all-natural, and it LIES!  When you are a professional or expert soap maker you know the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils. Well, so do they, and they decide to lie and mislead their customers. On the website, it states ‘essential oil of coconut”, which does not exist, and misspelled ‘lye’ writing “lie”.

You will have to use a fragrance oil for this bar, there is no essential oil. And even with the coconut oil in the soap, there is no noticeable leftover scent. Another bar I made that had a coconut scent was our Cuba Libre, yup, like the drink, with coconut, lime, and cola scents.  Lots of info here from Wikipedia on the uses of coconut oil.
