💜 Lavender Essential Oil Benefits, Uses & Soap Making Guide

Posted on 12-0201-18 by Tes

Overview: What Is Lavender Essential Oil?

Lavender essential oil is one of the most widely used and trusted essential oils in the world. Known for its calming aroma and gentle nature, lavender has been used for centuries to support relaxation, skin health, emotional balance, and natural healing.

Because of its versatility, lavender essential oil is commonly found in skincare products, hair care, aromatherapy blends, natural cleaning recipes, and handcrafted soap. It is often recommended as one of the best essential oils for beginners due to its broad range of uses and generally mild profile.

If you’re just getting started, a high-quality lavender essential oil or a small essential oil starter set can be a practical way to explore its many uses without buying multiple bottles at once.

Botanical Sources of Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is distilled from the flowering tops of the lavender plant. Several varieties are commonly used, each with slightly different characteristics:

  • Lavandula angustifolia – True lavender; most commonly used for aromatherapy and skincare

  • Lavandula latifolia – Spike lavender; stronger, more camphorous aroma

  • Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) – A hybrid variety often used in soap and cleaning products

True lavender is generally preferred for skin care and relaxation due to its softer, sweeter scent.

How Lavender Essential Oil Is Made

Lavender is made by steam distillation

Lavender essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of freshly harvested lavender flowers. This gentle process preserves the oil’s aromatic compounds and therapeutic properties.

High-quality lavender oil is typically clear to pale yellow and has a fresh, floral, slightly herbaceous aroma.

Aroma Profile & Emotional Benefits

Lavender essential oil has a soft, floral, herbaceous scent that is widely associated with calmness and relaxation. It is often used to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Promote restful sleep

  • Ease nervous tension

  • Support emotional balance

  • Create a peaceful atmosphere

Lavender is one of the most popular oils for bedtime routines and relaxation blends.

Top Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is prized for its wide range of natural properties:

  • Naturally calming and soothing

  • Supports healthy skin repair

  • Mild antibacterial and antiseptic properties

  • Helps ease headaches and tension

  • Supports emotional well-being

Its gentle nature makes it suitable for many everyday applications.

Lavender Essential Oil for Skin Care

Lavender is used in many skincare products

Lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils in natural skincare:

  • Soothes irritated or sensitive skin

  • Helps support minor cuts and burns

  • Commonly used for eczema-prone skin

  • Supports clearer-looking skin and helps calm redness

  • Frequently included in facial oils, creams, and balms

Lavender essential oil is often recommended for sensitive skin when properly diluted.

For skincare use, lavender essential oil should always be diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba oil or sweet almond oil before applying to the skin.

Lavender Essential Oil for Hair & Scalp Health

Lavender essential oil is widely used in natural hair care formulations:

  • Helps soothe itchy or irritated scalp

  • Supports scalp balance

  • Encourages healthy-looking hair

  • Often used in shampoos, conditioner bars, and scalp oils

It is suitable for most hair types and blends well with many other essential oils.

Many people like to mix lavender essential oil into a small glass dropper bottle or roller bottle for easy scalp or hair application.

🧼 Using Lavender Essential Oil in Soap Making

Lavender and soapmaking

Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils used in cold process soap making. Its pleasant aroma, versatility, and beginner-friendly behavior make it a staple in natural soap recipes.

Lavender holds its scent moderately well in cold process soap, especially when blended with anchoring oils such as cedarwood, patchouli, or frankincense. It is commonly used on its own or paired with citrus or herbal oils.

Lavender essential oil is ideal for:

  • Gentle everyday soaps

  • Baby and sensitive skin bars

  • Relaxation and bedtime soaps

  • Floral or herbal soap blends

Soap makers appreciate lavender for its low acceleration risk and predictable behavior.

Soap Maker Notes:

  • Scent strength: Medium

  • Acceleration risk: Low

  • Discoloration: None

  • Blends well with: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Frankincense, Lemon, Rosemary

When using essential oils in soap making, accurate measurement is critical. A digital gram scale helps ensure consistent, safe, and repeatable recipes.

Many soap makers also keep a soap making reference book or essential oil blending guide nearby when formulating new recipes.

    Hi Teresa,
Your site is great and beautiful. I really learned a lot about the soap making. More specifically the ingredients, which is what caught my eye( the images helped too). I really enjoy natural products and when it is possible I try to buy them because they can be expensive.
I have some of the essential oil and other oils as well. I didn’t realize that buying them in bulk was a possibility. I really like how you shared recipes because even that itself is hard to search for the correct one. Having the pictures of what the supplies and ingredients look like is helpful because there are some items listed that I have never heard of before. So, thank you for sharing the information. Very helpful and for the recipes, I’ll be sure to try some of them.

Hi Joe, Lavender is one of my favorite.  When I make soap I do batches of about 30 bars and add 2 ounces of lavender essential oil to that.  Have a look at these pages if you are interested in making your own soap.
