Accurate measurements are a must in soap-making
Using a good scale is very important.
If you are starting out making small batches of soap you could use a small kitchen scale, but if you are planning on doing this as a business you will want to invest in a larger scale.
The scale pictured above will hold up to 11 pounds. It works very well for larger batches of soap and has a stainless steel bowl for measuring your oils in.
The scale you choose must be able to give you weight in grams, ounces, and pounds, as you will use these basic measurements in soap making.
When buying a scale – which is an absolute must in soap making and probably one of the most important items you purchase.
Be sure that it has a good digital reading and I find it is best to get one that can run on battery as well as being plugged in. For the most part, I have mine plugged in, but it’s nice to be able to move it if need be and use the battery function
Getting a scale that can weigh ounces, pounds, and grams is a good idea because when you mix your water/lye solution the water is usually measured in ounces and the lye in grams.
Keeping your measuring to one system will help when making soap, but keep in mind that your Olive oil will come in liquid ounces and your coconut and palm oils will come in solid measurements like pounds.
I have created all my recipes to grams other than the water, which is measured in fluid ounces.
Having a scale that measures in grams is especially handy if you plan on making your own lotions and face creams.
The ingredients in these must be pretty precise as there can be a big difference between 1.1 and 1.2 ounces of beeswax, when can end up with a cream that is way to hard or to runny.

I have been using the Escali 136DK Digital Scale for over 7 years now and have no complaints. I have to update this and add another 9 years to this scale. I have been using it for a total of 16 years with no problems. Love this scale!
I use it for measuring soap and when I’m making lotions, bath salts, and balms.
It doesn’t have the stainless bowl like the CUISINART which is probably the only thing that could be added to the product.
One thing is for sure in soap making. You need a good accurate scale.

Great point. A scale would definitely be necessary in the art of soap making. It is like baking, as if you don’t measure the ingredients properly you will end up with a disaster.
Is the scale pictured on the right suitable for large scale soap production or should one go even bigger?
The Scale on the right will hold up to 11 lbs. that amount of oils will make approximately 75 bars of soap. I find 11 lbs is heavy enough for lifting and pouring, but you could certainly use this scale for bigger batches, just by measuring out your oils in two or more measurings and adding to another pot. Either that or getting a bigger scale, but unless you have something to help with the pouring, I’d stick to the smaller batches.
I never realized how important a scale was for making soap. We did that growing up a few times, and always ended up mismatch of quality. But you’re right, having a great scale would matter, especially for the ingredients. From your review, it seems like having the stainless steal would be a better decisions. It would be easier to wash.
I do find the stainless steel scale easy to clean, so yes that’s the one I use.
